Presenting the SouthSlam 2008 Awards
A Little From Left of Right
Written, Edited, Produced, and Directed by Marinell Haegelin
Description:
A LITTLE FROM LEFT OF RIGHT takes a particular route to promote awareness of cannabis' essential place in our arsenal of medical treatments. Exploring a history going back to ancient cultures, cannabis was prevalent in American medical treatments until as late as the 1940s. The backlash against "marijuana", a thinly veiled racial epithet, was contrived by opponents stemming in large part from economic self-interest.
The vanguard of the medical marijuana movement ardently relate the inside story surrounding Californians passing Proposition 215 in 1996, to ensure the rights of seriously ill Californians despite daunting federal laws. We meet the very people whose lives and health are impacted at a San Francisco holistic clinic. From societal bane to therapeutic remedy, cannabis'' gradual hard-earned return is revealed.

SouthSlam's Global Plot
Michael Jones is Managing Editor at Variety.com, covering the film festival beat from opening to closing night.
"Perhaps the highest form of flattery for a festival is to have its own angry spinoff. As Sundance has Slamdance, SXSW has SouthSlam.
Yet we wondered what festival in their right mind would accept and screen every film submitted to them.
A closer investigation reveals a not-so-hidden agenda -- namely a logo (pictured) that we've dissected as representing some sort of Irish-crested, Palm-winning organization that's certainly targeting world domination. And they've harnessed some kind of unnatural blue lightning. Are they are building an army of unwatchable films?
Lord help us all."
